some songs do not really belong to the person listening to them.
they belong to a place.
you can hear the same song years later and suddenly remember where you were when you first heard it.
sometimes it is a specific place.
a bedroom.
a car.
a road you used to take every day.
sometimes it is not even a place you remember very clearly.
you just know the song belongs there.
there was a song i used to hear on the way home.
nothing particularly important happened on those trips. it was just a road, usually at the end of the day, with the same buildings passing by the window.
but hearing that song now still makes me think of that road.
not the road as it looks today.
the road as it looked then.
this happens with other songs too.
one belongs to a room where i spent a lot of time.
another belongs to a particular year.
another belongs to a person who probably has no idea that i still associate that song with them.
the strange thing is that the song does not contain any of these things.
there is nothing about that road in the lyrics.
nothing about the room in the melody.
nothing about the person in the recording.
the song was simply there while those things were happening.
and somehow that was enough.
maybe this is why music can bring back parts of the past that we thought we had forgotten.
we usually remember important events because they were important.
music can preserve things that were never important enough to remember.
the way the afternoon looked.
what the weather was like.
what you were doing on an ordinary tuesday.
what the room looked like before it became somebody else's room.
you may not remember any of this when you try to think about that period of your life.
then the song starts playing.
and suddenly you remember the curtains.
the old chair.
the sound of traffic outside.
even the feeling of having no idea what your life would look like a few years later.
the song did not save the memory.
it saved the circumstances around it.
that is probably why some songs become difficult to hear after a long time.
not because they are sad.
sometimes the memory attached to them is not even particularly sad.
it is just gone.
the place is different.
the people are different.
you are different.
but the song is still exactly the same.
it can be strange to hear something that has not changed while realizing how much everything around it has.
perhaps that is why some songs never feel completely new again.
you can discover them in another city.
listen to them through better headphones.
hear them at a different age.
but somewhere inside them there is still that first place.
the road.
the room.
the person.
the ordinary day you did not know you would miss.
and maybe that is what makes certain songs feel like they belong somewhere.
not because they were written for that place.
because, for a little while, they were there with you.
